I received (They were on my list) a pair of Day Hikers from LL Beans for
Christmas...my old boots were taken over by my daughter for riding :)...
I love them. They are made for LL Bean by Merrill (sp?) and are very
comfortable. I do a lot of walking and participate in about 6 hikes per year,
of easy to modrate difficulty. They kept my feet dry throughout the winter,
did not get sore feet during the break in period, and they breath wonderfully.
For the hiking I do, I have not seen the necessity of a steal shank.
They also support my ankle enough so that I don't need my brace, that I had
to wear with my old boots (I have destroyed my ankle through various injuries).
LL Beans has a variety of hiking boots, depending on the amount of money
you want to spend and the amount of hiking you do. They do have a boot made
with Gortex, I think I've seen boots with steel shanks also.
My best advise to you, is to determine what type of hiking you will be doing
(even if it is only one rugged hike a year). Then by the boot appropriate
for the worst hiking you'll ever do.
