Learn to say NO. If this means some last minute event doesn't get
covered, then so be it. The problem is with the Field Director's lateness
in asking for help, not in your willingness to serve. The only way to
train him to ask sooner is to refuse the last minute requests.
You are right that your troop's plans should not be unnecessarily
disrupted, and the FD should certainly allow for time for proper paperwork
to be prepared. If not, then don't do it.
Remember: Planning isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing!
The problem may also be with the chamber of commerce or other org... and
only filtering thru the FD. The cure remains the same: "Gee, we'd love
to help but our boys are away on a campout that weekend and... If we'd
had notice a week ago we could easily have ..."
p.s. I suffer from last-minuteitis myself so I can say this!
