Someone had posted a critique of the Coleman canoes in comparison to more
sophisticated canoes such as Old Town. I completely agree with their
opinions that Coleman canoes are not top of the line. They do not handle
as well as many other models of canoe, lack some of their extra features,
and are not as light as aluminum. Coleman's advantages are that they are cheap
and durable. They
are not the Cadilac of canoes, more like a Chevy or Ford. They'll take
an incredible beating and they are extremely economical. Many of the
finer handling canoes out east will cost you $800-$900. You can buy a
couple of Coleman's for that amount.
My troop owns 6 Grumman aluminum canoes that we bought second hand. If
we are paddling fast water, we sometimes rent Old Town canoes, we can't
afford to own any. If we buy new canoes, we'll probably opt for a Coleman.
I hope this information is of help to someone.
