I just wanted to add a couple pennies to this. Last fall I hiked the
"Massacre Trail" with my son's patrol as part of the larger troop.
We had one boy who did not wear appropriate shoes nor did he
take good care of his feet. The troop pretty much left my patrol
behind. What was really interesting though was that there were
young Cub Scouts (some may have been Tigers) who were also hiking
the trail and having the time of their lives. They hiked the trail faster
than my patrol; they had a good time doing it; and they stayed together
the whole time. I do not know if the boys "trained" for the hike.
Nor do I now how they decided who would hike the train. All I know
is that when we made it to the finish, they were there running around
and having a good time.
The "Massacre Trail is about 12 miles long mostly along asphalt roads.
