The new Camp Director at Philmont is Mr. Frank Rigelman. I talked with
him earlier this year about next year's new age requirements, and whether
there can be some relaxation of the requirements. Generally, I support
the higher age requirement. However, we have a Scout in our troop with
a January birthday who just misses out this year on going on a trek --
and will again just miss out next year. Although the Scout is athletic,
large for his age, and has quite a lot of backpacking experience, he
must wait two extra years (at the minimum). Many of his (smaller)
friends will make the trek this year. It will probably be 1998 before
he can go because with the Jamboree in 1997, he will most likely opt
for that. Of course, I may be biased in his favor -- he's my son.
Mr. Rigelman said that his group at Philmont will meet later this month
to decide whether to be somewhat flexible with the age requirement for
the 1996 treks. Please let him know if you'd like to see some
flexibility. Address: Camp Director, Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron,
N.M. 87714. Phone: 505/376-2281.
For those that haven't heard, both Dave Bates (Camp Director) and
Forrest McVicar (PTC Director) stepped down this year. Dave is now in
the National Office.
