Camp Director POLL

I have a question which I would like to address to all on Scouts-L
Which is preferable for a BSA Summer Camp Director:
1.) A Paid Professional BSA Staff Member - In most cases a
District Executive. This person works for the council and
reports to the Scout Executive.
2.) A Voluntier Scouter - This is to say someone not normally
employed by the BSA like a Scoutmaster or other District
or Council Scouter who might well be paid WHILE serving as
a Camp Director, but is otherwise not a council employee.
In my 14 years on staff I have seem both good & bad in several councils. My
personal conclusion is that it depends on the person involved. I have seen
the new hapless DE assigned by his Scout Executive to "serve" his tour of
duty at a summer camp, the whole time hating the assignment including the
time away from district responsibilities & family. I have also seen
absentee Camp Directors who in fact did spend more time at the scout office
and in the district than at summer camp. On the other hand some of the
best Camp Directors I have ever worked with have been DE's who really wanted
to be out at summer camp.
By the same token I have seen volunteer Camp Directors get into near open
warfare with the Scout Executive during the camp season.
Others have been top notch.
So guys.....any feedback, insights???
