Even though I'm originally from the Chicago area, I'm allowed to say y'all
because I now live in the true south - Jackson, Mississippi.
I'm a Webelos Den Leader in the Andrew Jackson Council, Pack 15, Den 7 in
Madison, MS. I've got seven first year Webelos. Five have earned their
Webelos badge, one more will, and the last will probably drop out (It
I was a Scout in Troop 72 in Lake County, Illinois in the Oak Plain Council
as a youth in the late sixties. We had a very active Pack and Troop. I
dropped out when the Scoutmaster had a dispute with or was removed by the
Council. I never knew what this was about. We boys thought he was great. A
dad from the committee filled in temporarily with no success. I dropped out
in the confusion. I was a first class Scout couldn't get any guidance on
merit badges. The parents let politics become more important than the boys.
Three new packs got started in our community this year. When my son finishes
his AOL next year, we are starting a new troop. I have not decided whether
to be involved with the Pack or the Troop. My second son is a Tiger Cub this
Actually, I feel that there is a desperate need for better trained leaders in
our area. Many of them want advice, but pride won't let them ask. Perhaps,
this is where I'm needed.
I was a lucky one. Our Scout Shop had a pair of pants in my size with cargo
pockets. My Scouts feel that I desperately need a campaign hat and are
trying to earn me one by selling Scout Show tickets.
Women In Boy Scouts - Of course! But the male role model is one of the main
points of Boy Scouting. I can't believe the leaders that don't see a place
for women in Scouting. But I'm sure the dinosaurs hung around a bit before
they were extinct too.
Uniforms - I've got my cargo pockets! Cub Scout leaders need a different hat
since we are not supposed to wear the red & tan Boy Scout hat. I want to be
identified as a leader, not an oversized Webelos scout. Question for the
Aussies: What does a Johnson hat look like, maybe I need one of these.
Also, I hate the wearing of caps with advertising, ball teams, and so forth
with uniforms. It makes the uniform look cheap.
Roundtables - Webelos seem virtually forgotten in ours. The instructor has
been doing it for ten years and the material/instruction is just as dated.
Rather than a sharing of ideas, it is a lecture.
