There are more than 9,000 stamps worldwide by more than 160 nations which
honor Scouting. The United States has issues seven which fall under this
category. For all scouters who are also Philatelists (Stamp Collectors)
there is an organization called SOSSI/
SOSSI is the Scouts on Stamps Society International. The organization is
world wide and has about 3,500 active members who are stamp collectors that
concentrate on the Scouting topic. Strictly speaking membership in
organizations like BSA, GSUSA, etc is not required but we find almost all of
our members are involved in some aspect of scouting.
Perhaps you have seen a SOSSI booth at a council Scout Show. There are
chapters from around the country and many sponsor special envelope
cancellations commemorating special events. If you have ever been to the
Merit Badge midway at a BSA National jamboree you have seen the SOSSI people
at work again.
Recently a SOSSI team put together a revision for the BSA Stamp Collecting
Merit Badge pamphlet. I have been a counselor for 13 years and sponsor a
local Ben Franklin Stamp Club at the post office. Once a year (In October
which is celebrated by the Post Office as National Stamp Collecting Month) I
have put on a Stamp Collecting Merit Badge Clinic which traditionally has
been booked solid from year to year.
This AOL posting is to let others in the Cyberspace Scouting Universe know
about SOSSI. We have a bi-monthly newsletter and dues are $15.00 a year. I
welcome inquiries about our organization as well as questions anyone out
there might have about some old stamps they may have----scouting or
To expose these scouting stamps & other stamps to young people is to give
them a visual history of the growth of our movement and how scouting has
evolved in other countries around the world.
My troop has even gotten a reputation as the "Stamp Collecting" troop at
Council Scout Shows because every year we make Badge-A-Matic buttons with
name & troop number plus some kind of postage stamp depending on the theme of
the show. Last year, for example, we featured Native American stamps. Even
a year later I am amazed to go to Cuborees and other events and see scouts &
leaders walking around with their STAMP name tags still on their uniform.
Scouting & Stamp Collecting.....They go together & SOSSI works hard every day
to keep it that way.
To join SOSSI (Dues are $15.00 a year) and get an application just E-Mail me
