Karen Saunders wrote descibing the incentives Girl Scouts use to encourage
cookie sales. I like what she described much more than what BSA does for
popcorn. This year the top prize was pump up basketball shoes (if I recall
it correctly), where last year it was a video game setup. I strenuously
object to the latter, although it never became an issue in our household. I
object to basketball shoes slightly less strenuously.
What happened to the idea that the popcorn sales are to benefit Scouting? I
don't object to small tokens, but I think that BSA has gone overboard with
the popcorn awards. Part of our committee feels the same way, although one
Den Leader didn't feel that the awards were big enough. Big difference of
opinion on that subject in our committee.
Bottom line: the awards are all out of proportion and the boys miss the
"for the good of us all" message.
