Although now in Houston, I'm a native Arizonan. I had an old lawyer friend
tell me recently that one of the newest trends in harrasment is, rather than
filing a suit, to call CPS and tip them off to alleged parental child abuse.
He apparently has gotten several cases quite recently that way. In all of
them, the children were forcibly removed from the home and placed in the
foster system, while the parents tried to refute the charges. Bad news,
since the parents are considered guilty on the basis of an anonymous phone
call. Here in Houston, we had an old lady on our street, a real mean old
bag, who called CPS complaining about every family on the street, saying we
allowed, even encouraged, our children to be vandals and gang members.
Cool, huh? Seeing as how the 30 or so kids in our little cul-de-sac are
all under the age of ten it wasn't very realistic. CPS came out and
discovered that we let our kids draw on the sidewalks with chalk and we let
them play together, encouraging them to ride bikes, play ball, whatever.
Thankfully common sense prevailed in this situation, except that the old
bag doesn't dare come out of her house anymore....
Still, that one little incident taught me a lesson. We, in the USA, are
losing a great many of our rights. We are not always presumed innocent
until proven guilty (CPS, IRS,EPA,etc. ). We don't always have the right to
face our accusers. Many of the fundemental freedoms our founding fathers
placed in the constitution are being stripped away by bureaucrats and
politicians. Let's all think about that. It's real important, especially
for our children.
