re Bob Gerrish's comment about 4-H being "only farming oriented"...
After I became a Scout leader, I started to notice at the State Fair 4-H
display building just how much their program is like BSA...teaching kids
the skills to not only get through life, but enjoy it as well. Yes, most
of the projects I saw were oriented toward teaching the kids skills they
would need to work a farm/live in a rural area, but if you take a look at
the BSA handbook, most of those skills seem to be oriented toward getting
urban youth out into the "country" as something "different" from their
daily lives. My son asked one year if he could join 4H, because he wanted
to raise a cow <g>. I had to explain that the kids who raised cows
already lived on farms that had cows.
