Bill has been doing some research on Scouts-L about BSA Summer Camp First
Year Camper Programs including a wonderful poll survey which I am eagerly
anticipating the results on.
This discussion is very important to me because at the Thunder Scout
Reservation of the Flint River Council in Central Georgia we understand that
the successful operation of our FYC program is vital to the contrinued
strength in scouting for units in our council and for returning scouts to our
camp. I am frankly amaized how some camps can so focus on their high
adventure programs to the point that they almost ignore the FYC.
Anyway...off my soapbox....Bill wants, needs, and has been begging for the
BSA National First Year Camper Program Guide. It is available from National
BSA (Printing 1991) as # 3420. I am not sure how much it costs but anyone
who has been to Program Director Certification should have got one at camp
school. The guide goes into a three ring binder and is 96 pages long.
Bill I am concerned that no one in your scout office could help you on this,
it just further raises my concerns that for many scouters, some of the best
resources that BSA offers are not made available to the unit leaders as well
as district and council support volunteers.
EVERYONE: Ask to see the "Bin Publication Book" the next time you are at
your scout service center. This guide has 50 pages of free materials,
literature, etc which are NOT available from Supply Division but rather from
the National Office. If you are a NESA, OA, Relationships Committee, or any
one of a dozen other support positions you will find your job a lot easier
with these materials.
