Snipe hunting, continuously sending new scouts after keys to
the oar locks, smoke shifters, etc. comes under the NY State
hazing statutes and is technically illegal, just as is fraternity
hazing in college.
These types of hazing incidents also can ruin scouting for new
scouts. I'm shocked that they would even be suggested on this
As scoutmaster, I always took my new scouts aside before
summer camp and warned them about snipes, smoke shifters,
etc. so that they wouldn't be hazed by older scouts. I also make
it a practice of informing any young scouts that approach me
with this type of nonsense that they are being had.
I'm very sensitive to the hazing issue, in that a college fraternity
pledge with me had to be talked off the Harvard Bridge in Boston
because of hazing in my fraternity. Fortunately, the fraternity
saw the light and discontinued hazing before they were required to

Find something better to do with the new scouts and have them
learn something which is fun.
