Another good book for leaders and older youth is
"Weathering the Wilderness - The Sierra Club Guide to Practical Meterology",
Wm. E. Reifsnyder, Sierra Club Books, 1980, ISBN 0-87156-266-9
It covers weather basics, weather hazards, a general description of the
portion of the atomosphere that we're likely to find ourselves camping in,
wind chill, and etc. In addition, it covers regional climatologies for the
primary continential NA mountain ranges.
I've learned much from this book, and on one occasion I like to think that
what I learned kept me from being caught in an early high country snow storm
that left 1.5 feet of snow in late September 1983.
