Someone commented earlier--and I accidentally deleted the response--that
they had observed that scouts who worked on MBs earlier seemed to do better
than those who didn't begin until they had reached first class.
I would appreciate comments from others as to whether they see a difference.
I do think that many scouts see the MB program rather than rank advancement
as the most interesting. The first question many "new" parents have is how
soon their boys can start earning merit badges. Perhaps we need to recognize
that some scouts are more interested in the "specialties" of merit badges than
in the basic scout skills of Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class.
One thing I do favor strongly is assuring that a scout meets the T,2nd or 1st
requirements related to a merit badge subject area BEFORE he begins the merit
