I've been teaching scouts on rappelling for the past couple years. The
Venture pamphlet is a good start but I'd highly recommend a book called
"On Rope" written by Allen Padgett and Bruce Smith to anyone getting started.
The book is published by the National Speleological Society's Vertical
Section (about 340 pages). It's under $20 I believe and can be ordered
direct from the NSS at 2813 Cave Avenue, Huntsville, Alabama, 35810
This book can answer about any question you might have in regards to
equipment and methods. The BSA pamphlet looks like an outline in
comparison. Obviously it's best to have an experienced instructor work
with you (and I believe required), but if you want to get a good
foundational start, check out this book.
The NSS can also put you in touch with the leaders of your local grotto
(cave club) so that you can find an experienced instructor if you don't
already know one.
Good luck & Have Fun!
