OK. If you want a challenge and to give the Scouts a real sense of
accomplishment, teach the 2nd Class reguirement 1b in a way that really does
the "map you have drawn" thing. Everything that should be taught is on pages
198-99 of the handbook.
This is probably the least enforced requirement in the book because it is so
terribly written. You, the Scout, and myself simply cannot draw a map like
that and take a 5 mile hike in it. We can however draw a map of a campsite
with 6 or 7 key points accurately located. The 5 mile hike can be done
seperately using another map. That's the only way that I can see that the
Scout will learn the map making skill.
A serious contest for the best map each week would help. I would be glad to
help with the reward (something from the trading post?) if money is a problem.
