I was also at the '81 Jamboree and got to meet the King of Sweden. I was a
member of the band that year.
Brief story: With the King coming, the ptb at the Jamboree decided protocol
demanded the Swedish National Anthem be played on his arrival, even though
he insisted this was a _private_ visit. Well our band director didn't have
the music for it (would you?). He called the State Department and they had
a special courrier from the Pentagon send it down.
He spent the good part of the day there, always accompanied by "gold-tab
handlers". I don't know which made more of an impression on people: his
pressence, or his wearing of the Swedish Scout uniform.
The Swedish monarchy is not nearly as "regal" as that of Britain. The King
had been active in Scouting as a youth and remained quite involved on the
national and international level as an adult. The more low-keyed nature of
his position (as contrasted with the UK) has allowed him opportunities he
may not otherwise have had.
