Welcome aboard! Remember, it's ONLY an "hour a week"!

Now he is supposed to start working on ELECTIVES. These are in the back of
the bear book, but can also be parts/components of achievements that weren't
used for the bear badge. Typically, since the Cub has the option of doing
"one for God", "three for Country", etc., they end up with some "unused"
achievments when they get the bear badge. I think Jon had done parts of ALL
of the Country achievements, but since he only needed to finish 3, he is
using the other parts as electives. (See p 254-255 of the bear book for a
(probably better) explanation. For each 10 elective activites done, Matthew
will get an arrow point -- the first 10 get him a gold arrow point, each of
the next 10 earn a silver arrow point. There is (I believe) no limit on how
many arrow points a Cub can earn on either the Wolf or Bear level, but the
practical limit seems to be about 4 -- one Gold, 3 silver. I state that
practical limit primarilly for reasons of shirt-pocket real estate!
I may be out of line here, "officially", but our Pack moves everyone up at
the end of the school year. Jon will graduate to first-year Webelos in May,
which will allow him to go to "Webelos Bear Creek Camp" (our Council 3-night
summer camp for Webelos), and to begin working on his Webelos badge and
activity pins. Because our Pack doesn't meet in the summer, we frequently
have guys finishing up arrow points during the early summer, which they are
then awarded at the September meeting -- sometimes along with their Webelos
badge. We treat summer as a transition period, when Cubs might actually be
finishing off one rank and starting another.
