I agree with David Drabkin regarding congratulatory notes from the
President and Vice-President. I think the notes should be sought, and
should be appreciated when they arrive. I also think that we who are
parents of Eagle Scouts should be very careful about our comments.
True Story: I received my Eagle Scout award in 1966. I received a very
nice letter from Senator John Tower (unsolicited). My father glanced
at the letter, then said "He's probably just trying to get my vote!"
I have a scrapbook from my days as a Scout. It doesn't include Senator
Tower's letter, because I threw it away! My father was probably only
joking--but his comment devalued the letter in my eyes, so I discarded
it. So please, everyone guard your language carefully.
