The following is a letter received in our council office from Philmont
Scout Ranch, BSA.
January 27, 1995
Because of the tremendous interest in Scouts and Explorers wanting to
attend Philmont, the reservation procedure for expeditions has been
changed for the 1996 Camping season.
First and foremost, the telephone reservation system has been
reinstituted. We will conduct the initial sign-up for 1996 on April 3
and 4, 1995. You or a representative from your unit must call
(407)875-8991 between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm, EST, to place your
reservation. Please complete the enclosed worksheet prior to placing
your call to enable us to accurately and efficiently process your
request. Reservation requests after this initial period must be made by
contacting the Camping Registrar at Philmont (505/376-2281) beginning
April 17, 1995.
In the event that suitable 1996 dates are not available, you will have
the option of being placed on the 1996 waiting list OR reserving a 1997
expedition. IMPORTANT - 1997 RESERVATIONS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED IF 1996
DATES ARE NOT AVAILABLE AND ONLY DURING THE APRIL 3 & 4, 1995 SIGNUP.
Note that 1997 is also a National Jamboree year. Deposits for 1996
treks are due within 30 days of receiving a confirmation letter.
Deposits for *1997* treks will be due on January 15, 1996. Hopefully,
all units desiring a Philmont experience can be accomodated as a result
of these changes.
Beginning with the summer of 1996, the age requirement to participate in
a Philmont trek will be 14 years by January 1 of the year attending.
Experience has shown that older Scouts are more likely to possess the
mental and emotional maturity to effectively cope with the challenges of
a Philmont trek and to share duties in harmony with other participants.
Also, to serve as many youth as possible, Philmont crews of 7-12
participants must have a majority of youth members and not more than
four (4) adult leaders over 21 years of age. At least two adult leaders
are required to meet the two deep leadership policy of the Boy Scouts of
America. Philmont recommends that you give priority to applicants who
have not previously participated in a Philmont trek. Please refer to
the enclosed brochure "1996 Philmont Adventures" for additional
We appreciate your understanding and support of these changes and look
forward to serving your unit. Best wishes from Philmont.
