I have to agree with Clif Golden's position in opposition to co-ed
Scouting at the Cub and Scout levels.
First of all, I am _not_ a hidebound chauvinist. I have always supported
equality of rights, opportunity, and treatment regardless of gender--I also
voted for the ERA some years ago.
That said, I do feel that there is value in allowing children to have the
opportunity of being in same-sex groups. Right now, Scouting is almost the

religious youth groups are co-ed; cheerleading teams are co-ed; karate
classes are co-ed; summer camps are co-ed; virtually every activity that
young people are involved in is now co-ed. Therefor I simply can't buy the
arguement that Scouts have to be co-ed so that boys and girls can learn to
live and work together. They're already living and working together virtually
every waking moment of the day. If they're not learning it now, they never
So please, let them have one activity where boys can gather into small groups
of boys and girls into groups of girls and do the things they enjoy. By all
means, expand the Girl Scouting program to include more adventurous activities.
