In NY State, you must be an NRA certified instructor in the discipline
you wish to teach, ie Rifle or Shotgun, muzzle loading certification is
also required to teach muzzle loaders.
Other options are certification by FBI or State as a rifle or shotgun
instructor. A hunter safety instructorship does not count by itself.
In addition, in it's infinite wisdom, NYS has decreed that an Officer
in the military may be certified to teach. This was a real shock to
a friend of mine who was a captain in the AF who said his knowledge
consisted of qualifying on a 45 in ROTC.
In addition, the scout must be at least 12 years old to participate in
any shooting activity.
My certs are rifle, shotgun, pistol, and muzzle loading rifle.
Hope this helps. If you attend BSA shooting sports camp school, you
will receive the rifle, shotgun, and muzzle loading rifle certs from an
NRA Training Counselor.
