Help protect Florida manatees

Last year my Cub Scout pack in London UK were working on their World
Conservation badge. As most of you will know, the World Conservation Award
is the only <international> Cub Scout training award and is sponsored by the
World Wildlife fund. Here in UK it is one of our activity badges. (Each
nation has slightly different requirements to suit its own program.)
One of the activities involves helping to protect an endangered animal , and
we decided to " sponsor " a manatee in the Blue Spring State Park in
Florida. Sadly, today I received a letter from the " Save the Manatee Club"
informing me that "our" manatee, Boomer, had been killed by a motorboat last
year, which is the reason why he did not turn up for the winter season. You
will realise how my boys will be upset by this news when I break it to them.
I understand that the Florida legislature has taken some measures to
restrict powerboat activity which threatens these harmless creatures,
but that even so 48 manatees were killed by boats last year alone.
If y'all in the US are looking for conservation issues , how about a thought
for the manatees ? For info the Save the Manatee Club is on (407) 539 0990
