Radio Merit Badge.... A bad subject with me...
[Warning this may sound like a flame... BUT it is an actual
documented fact.. Anyone who would like to continue the
crusade, is welcome]
Several years ago (1991 or 1992) after my son received his
Technician Plus Ham radio licence, I looked a bit closer at
the requirements for Radio Merit Badge (I am a registered
Councelor -- COMPLETE with a 42 coded form -- in addition to
my form as an Explorer advisor)... The ham radio portion
is a joke... It was great for about the time I was born
(1949), but today it is a joke... I wrote a letter to
BSA advancement in Dallas, requesting to modify the reqirments
more inline with the 90's...
I.E. remove the Morse code contact portion... Change it to
participate in communications in any mode (I listed a few,
including packet, etc)... This change could make the badge
acheivable by a non-ham or any ham today. The idea was to
make the MB acheivable in a JOTA environment...
T.J. VanHouten, wrote me back that BSA wasn't interested in changing
the requirement because the ARRL (ham radio organization) agreed
with the requirements. I then wrote the ARRL and received a nice
letter from their educational activities person. Her name is Rosemary.
I had placed a copy of my letter to BSA in my letter to the ARRL.
The basic line was that she pretty much agreed with me and she had
not talked to anyone at BSA for a long time. I am not trying to make
T.J. or anyone at BSA look bad here. I just think that it is time
[WAY PAST time] to review that portion of the Radio Merit Badge.
What I think is that those of us here at Scouts-L who are hams,
and / or those who are interested in reviving the badge... It is
a DEAD badge.... have got to get together and get BSA to listen
to the fact that Radio has changed...
Comments will be appreciated either thru Scouts-L or directly....
