Maj. John Danner writes about the desire of his pastor to bring the Scouts
back under the direct sponsorship of the church. I am surprised by this,
because it is my understanding that that the American church has told all
bishops, NOT to charter any SCOUT troops.
This is being done solely from a perspective of liability. With the Knights
as sponsors there is no DEEP POCKET to go after in the event of an injury,
child endangerment or any one of a number of reasons that less than ethical
people go after deep pockets. So while John is stuck in a very tough and
from my perspective VERY ENVIABLE place, he needs to tactfully suggest that
the pastor check with his diocese for their guidance on this.
As for dual chartering, I will let that answer come from someone who
understands that question. I am only familiar with the liability issue as
relates to the Catholic Church.
