Well, Claudia, you got me on that one. I don't mind the snow, but the -20
degree days are starting to lose their charm. Life in Minnesota has 2
phases; surviving winter, or getting ready for winter. So a person learns to
deal with it. I have five rules for living with winter:
1. Have a good battery so your car will start.
2. Keep your car tuned up to it will start.
3. Have good snow tires so once it is started, it will keep going.
4. Have a good indoor hobby for the bad days.
5. Have a good outdoor hobby for the good days.
We still don't have any snow (although I hear on the radio it is snowing up
in the Twin Cities right now), but the weather service says the temps this
weekend, POLAR Days weekend, are going to be a high of -5 degrees to zero,
with the low at -20 degrees Saturday night. The district was considering
cancelling because we don't have enough cabins for everyone, but it seems to
be sorting itself out; the DE took a staw poll and a bunch of troops have
decided not to come, and the rest were coming on their own even if the
district cancelled. So there should be room for the ones that are coming. We
are going to revise the program, though, to have activity periods no longer
than 1 hour, with warm-up time between.
However, I seem to have done too good a job of selling winter camping. All
but 2 of my scouts, and my 2 crazy ASM's, are still planning to camp
outside. That means I will have to, also, or I will never hear the end of
it. I was/am planning to build a straw bale "igloo" as a demonstration (and
warmer sleeping) which will help. The best part is that I have the program
all set for next year, because we sure can't use it this year!
So if I don't freeze into one giant iceburg (does fat freeze??) I will see
you next week...
