A few comments on uniforming....
My troop expects full uniforms to be worn when we wear them. No
half-and-half with a shirt and jeans or other pants. Never will we
permit splitting the uniform. I explain to our members that you don't
see sports figures, policemen, and other uniformed people in only half a
uniform (unless that is the total uniform). I also explain the pride in
wearing it. We do receive many complements about our whole troop being
in full uniform at camps and other large gatherings. It makes the boys
feel good to hear this also.
My feelings toward half unifomrms.....are you only half in the program?
As far as cost goes, this is an item to take up with the National
Office. We can, of course, stock used uniforms for those in need. We do
this all the time. As boys outgrow parts of unforms, have them donate to
the troop. I hear that pants are too expensive or forcing someone to buy
pants might keep him out of the program. That same person probably has
the money to buy all the snacks and candy he needs. A saving of just a
few dollars does not make someone "thrifty". If we wanted to cut costs,
a white t-shirt is much cheaper than a regular Scout Uniform shirt.
Maybe cutting back on when the uniform is to be worn, but wear it
properly and completely when it is, will work better. A good example is
at most summer camps, the uniform is to be worn to the evening meal only.
