I believe what Jim calls the Air Explorer Silver Award actually was the
Silver Award, earned by all Explorers through 1959(?) The Explorer ranks
were bronze, gold and silver, and you earned them by accumulating "ratings"
worn on the right sleeve of your dark green long sleeve shirt (about in the
same place as a Boy Scout's first six merit badges). It took four ratings to
get to Silver, and they were TOUGH. I remember only physical fitness and
orienteering, both of which I did in mid-summer at El Rancho Cima the then
just opened Explorer Camp between San Marcos and Wimberly, Texas.
Jim is correct. The medal is spectacular!
