I've read some of the discussion concerning the Pinewood Derby and
thought I'd share the way our pack runs the derby.
We rent a 3-lane track with electronic timer at the finishing line
and a computer that displays the results of each race on a large TV.
The cars are assigned to divisions based on scout rank (Tiger, Wolf,
Bear, Webelos I, Webelos II, family) and then each car is raced three
times (once in each lane). Place within the pack and the separate
divisions is determined by the fastest combined time for all three
runs. Trophies are awarded to the top three finishers in each
division and medals to the top three finishers in the pack (excluding
the family division).
This year we had 51 cars and the derby took a little over an hour to
complete. The boys like the division system as they are competing
against boys of the same age and ability (I try to keep the parents
from "helping" by issuing a "Cubmaster's Challenge" to take me on in
the family category).
We've done it this way for a number of years now with no problems
(other than a late arrival of the track this year; question for the
day was "Where's the track, Mike?")
Food for thought.
