I like your idea of an all out Adult's race. I think it would sublimate some
of the urges for those "engineer types" to get too involved in their boys
projects. I threatened to do the same for every Derby I was involved in but
never was bold enough to get it going.
I have one suggestion and one idea for you to mull. Suggestion: Don't have
prize money. That doesn't seem to be the Scouting way, at least to me.
Other prizes could be substituted instead. Besides, the adults will be out
for blood anyway. Idea: Since the adults are going to be tempted to cheat
you could have a class with minimal rules. Maybe just size and weight
restrictions. You could also have a pure "stock" class where the full rules
apply. If you have both classes the better prizes should, IMHO, go to the
stock class. The guys running the way out cars are going to be motivated by
the "gee whiz" factor.
Have fun any way you do it.
