In the Columbia River Girl Scout Council, 1st grade girls are
usually Brownies. We are in Washington and Oregon; the counties
that border the Columbia River.
When I was a Brownie Leader, we had a whole raft of 1st graders.
They did fine. Don't expect a lot of reading skills though - that
is where the 2nd and 3rd graders get to shine (and show leadership).
Our troop even had a kindergartener (my very own daughter, who, due to
the Sept 1 school cutoff date, did K twice. She still wishes she was
in 7th grade, instead of 6th, and would probably do very well there also....)
She is now a 6th grade Cadette. I wouldn't recommend it for every girl,
but she is 12, and had done her 3 years of Junior Girl Scouting.
Good luck, however it turns out. Daisy is a one-year program however. You
sort of have to bridge them to Brownies!
