I have been monitoring the discussion about "advancement" ceremonies with
great interest...but I have seen one advancement missing that we have found
critical in keeping boys involved in scouting....TIGER CROSS-OVER INTO CUB
Each year, we have a special ceremony (usually in April/May) to "cross-over"
the Tiger Cubs into the Pack. During this very special ceremony, the Tigers
are formally welcomed into the Pack (though they really can't start doing
stuff until the following year). We (representatives of each den) present
each Tiger with a Wolf neckerchief and make a big fuss over them.
Before we started this ceremony, we had about 50% of our Tigers continuing
into Cub Scouts. Since we started this ceremony, we are keeping over 90% of
our Tigers! KEY ITEM - Current Cub Scouts (not leaders) perform this
ceremony. It really makes the Tigers feel welcome and a part of the pack.
