Subj: Openings for U.S. Scouts to Visit Black Sea Area of Eastern Europe
In late July / early August, 1995 a group of approximately 16 U.S. Scouts
will visit the Black Sea area around Varna, Bulgaria. Their activities will
include camping with Bulgarian Boy Scouts and Girl Scout on or near the Black
Sea, homestays in Varna with Scout families, sightseeing, cultural
activities, and visits to one or more other areas of the country.
This trip is being organized by Thomas N. Turba, International Representative
of the Indianhead Council of the Boy Scouts of America, St. Paul, Minnesota.
The trip will be the second visit of U.S. Scouts to Bulgaria, and is part of
an on-going exchange program. As part of this program, 20 Bulgarian Scouts
and leaders visited the U.S. in 1994 for training under a grant from the
United States Information Agency.
It currently appears that there will be room for approximately eight (8)
out-of-council Scouts on this trip. Youth participants must be between the
ages of 13 and 21. Female Explorer Scouts are eligible and encouraged to
A limited number of positions for adult leaders over 21 are available.
Preference will be given to leaders that have accompanying Scouts.
Estimated cost for the 3-week trip, including airfare, is approximately
$1,200 leaving from Minneapolis/St. Paul. The actual point of departure will
be Kennedy Airport. Individual costs will vary depending on point of origin.
Participants will be required to learn the Bulgarian alphabet and simple
Knowledge of one or more European languages besides English is recommended
but not required.
