Congratulations, you have just performed the unintentional version of
felting. Do it a few more times and you will have a nice piece of thick
wool felt.. HA HA.
The fact that you wasked the socks is not much of a problem.
The fact that you dried them is not good news but may not be catastrophic.
I regularly wash and dry my wool socks but you must avoid over drying,
but then the horse is already out of the barn.
What you need to do, is to soak the socks in tepid water for several
Then you should step on the toe of each sock and grasping the top of the
sock with your hand over the top, pull slowly but forcefully as far as the
sock will stretch.
You will hear a strange sort of tearing "Velcro" sound as you pull the
interlocked wool barbs apart. If the sock is a good one you can not tear
it no matter how hard you pull.
Then starting at the toe, grasp the top of the sock with one hand and
the bottom in the other and stretch this direction, repeating untill you
reach the opening in the sock. Be carfull at the opening, as you must
be carfull not to pull this part to hard or your socks will not stay
up any more because you will destroy athe elastic that may have been
added to the yarn in this section.
Repeat the above stretching procedures untill you no longer hear movement
You should be able to get back to about size 10 1/2 to 11.
In the future only dry your socks untill they are warm, then "stake them out"
on top of the dryer after stretching them. and wait for them to dry.
GOOD LUCK COLD FEET
