My Boy Scout Troop has a father/son cake decorating contest and later
that night a cake auction. Every cake gets some type of award, best
of show, 1st place most creative, most calories, most colorful, etc.
We got the idea from a Cub Pack. It has been a nice fundraiser for
us. Cakes start selling at about 5 to 7 dollars. Our highest price
was $140, that was the year many alumni Scouts were present due to
an award being presented to a former leader.
This is not our only fundraiser, it's one of many. We usually
earmark the proceeds for a specific purpose. We just completed our
3rd annual cake auction.
I have never considered hurt feelings by anyone during the auction.
No one has ever commented on that aspect to me before. It is a good
point. Our auction is conducted by a professional auctioneer and
held in conjunction with a Court of Honor night. We usually have a
particular theme for each COH, November is cake auction.
A family can contribute by baking the cake without buying it back.
I feel the cake is a contribution. They come up with some great
cakes. I think everyone is having fun.
