While we were sharing Thanksgiving dinner with relatives from the Omaha area,
we got off on the topic of Scouting. My cub scout nephew mentioned that
their pack had recently raised money through a father-son cake auction.
They have competition in several areas such as sports cakes, car cakes, etc.
and then auction the cakes. In past years they have had a professional
auctioneer but this year they did a silent auction. (They made more with the
professional auctioneer.) My sister-in-law reported that the top cake sold
for $70 last year. It was a suspension bridge. A big cake in the shape of
stadium sold for around $50. She says it is the only fund raiser they do
all year and they have plenty of money for their activities. Sounded like
fun to me and I thought someone else might like to try it.
