Can you criticise leaders for doing what they have promised to do, when
they made their promise to become a leader.
Now they've added pestering?? I knew that lots of things had changed
since I was a leader, but this is too much :-)
Seriously though, I think that regardless of one's views on atheism,
it shouldn't be difficult to see that `pestering' is inconsistent with
respect for the views of others.
How can you swear to somthing in which you do not believe.
Well, suffice it to say that some people can. If I *really* wanted to
join an organization which would only let me join if I took an oath
``to do my duty to the Tooth Fairy'', I would have no moral objection
to the oath despite the fact that I do not believe in any Tooth Fairy.
There are alternatives, i.e. youth groups etc, if you want to be in
Scouting/Guiding, then you must accept its conditions, or at least be
open to them.
Atheism is not inconsistent with all Scouting/Guiding organizations.
Even in organizations such as BSA which are actively antagonistic
toward athiests, the policies which allow all other religions
effectively allow many athiests. An athiest who is willing to use the
label `God' in connection with something in which they believe --
`Love' is often suggested as a good one -- can meet all of the
religious requirements without being dishonest. Defining `God' and
`religion' can get tricky.
I hope that you do not see my posting as a personal attack to you, I
would not like it to be read in that way. However, as I am sure I have
made clear, I have strong views on this subject, and I felt it
appropriate to make them known.
Certainly, although this one's been hashed out quite a few times . . . .
