Here's an alternative suggestion for the way to do topics....by
I would keep the GEN (GENeral), BGA (Boy/Girl scouting in
America...that's combining the BSA and the GSUSA) labels; but I would
use the following to describe the types of posting made:
ADMIN: Postings of an admin nature, including those which elaborate
on making new folks here feel confortable. This would be great for
postings like "New Subscriber", "How do I get file XYZ from the
Listserver?" and "Is the Listserver still up?" This is where also
Scouters would leave messages stating that "they are on (vacation)
(sabbatical) (military duty) (the Space Station Freedom) *just seeing
if you are reading this...*" and that they won't be back for (one
week) (a month) (whatever)".
MEM: Postings which express or asks how do we get members, what to do
with difficult members/leaders, and questions/comments on the
relationship between "subgroups" in the program (in the BSA, for
instance, this would might take the form of "How do we interact better
with the LDS units" or "How can I serve kosher foods during a
campout?" or "I am having problems getting kids to join."
PROG: Postings (the vast majority of postings here) which address
specific or general areas of the program of our youth agency. While
some of these questions and comments may spill over to other areas,
the vast amount of issues and questions raised here are
program-related. Our questions about "Eagle Courts of Honor...how to
do them?", "What is the right way to wear the World Crest", "What is
the difference between a Rover and a Venturer?" and "Tell me about
your countries' program...how do you find camping sites in your
country?" can be labeled as "program" questions.
FIN: Postings (which we get a few, but not that many) which address
or asks questions or give concerns about fundraising and the entire
financial picture of our programs. "What is SME and is it different
or the same as our Popcorn Sales?" is a good question which would go
in this category.
SPT: Postings which tackle the "technicalities" and "percularities" of
our programs, SuPporT. This is the other large area where we seem to
get a lot of questions and issues raised. This is the category where
any talk about rules and regulations, the BSA's Youth Protection
Program, the issue with Troop 18, and questions on where the XYX
Council is or how do I get my professional to take time to tell me
what's going on are examples in this area.
(the five areas listed are the five functions of a BSA Council....
Adminstration, Membership/Relationships, Program, Finance Support and
Then (purely from a selfish point-of-view only), I would add two other
INFO: Postings which announce Wood Badge, special camping programs,
vacanies in camps or within organizations, or general information
about upcoming activities and events in our programs. This is where
the postings announcing advanced training courses, national and
regional meetings, postings from groups in support of or advocating
youth programs (like for instance, mine...), and even periodic
reminders of other youth agency publications and resources would be
posted under this topic.
INSP: Postings which would tend to inspire or movivate other youth
leaders and which tend to bring the program a bit closer to each
Scouter here. Examples would be "Scoutmasters' Minutes", stories of
how things went at their first meeting/campout/planned event/unplanned
event, how things sometimes don't go well....and the trials of being a
Scouter. Here would also go excerpts from books and publications
(again, like mine) which bring "home" the story or fact that being a
member of a national youth group in this day and age is hard and that
your work is truly appreciated.
Nine categories (really, seven with the other two used as "additional
identifiers"), with more to expand upon as time goes onward. I
realize that each time someone posts a message here, they have to
decide if the issue is a "program one" or a "support one". But once
someone decided that wearing a uniform incorrectly is a program issue
and not a support issue, then that's how we respond and answer it.
I don't like the idea of subdiving to which audience my postings go
to. I've always taken it that ALL of my postings are to be read by
everyone that wishes to do so except when someone asks for a private
response. I don't really know how effective this will be since some
of us (hand raised high and pointing to himself) likes to stray from
the topic in responding many times (particularily if the person is
someone that I've haven't heard from in a while and I wanted to *jab*
him or her publically....)
That brings up the other reason why I wanted to post this and get my
2.5 pennies in. I think that there are some here that forgot why they
came here to Scouts-L....yeah, yeah..to get information that they were
craving from people obiously VERY interested in seeing them succeed.
But you came here in a greater part because you heard how much FUN
we've had here, all 544 of us...sitting around debating whether or not
Beavers are better than the Foxes (which they ARE, you know!!!
*grinning*) or posting symphatic comments to a Scouter that has to
leave the list due to a job change. We've talked seriously about many
issues here, but what I hear more than ANY other comment about this
list is that "you people have fun and you don't drag each other into
the mud" as other groups do. You sing silly songs and come up with
some neat things for me to try at home....I wish that EVERY list was
As Jessica said over the speakerphone, "We've grown into a group of
concerned people, a real family. Isn't that what Scouting is supposed
to be about?"
Let's not get too wrapped with the topic designations...it DOES make
it easy for me to pare down what to read *first*, but I READ
EVERYTHING from this list EVERY DAY I GET A CHANCE to.
Topic headers or not.
