Your last question in some ways may be one of the most important. What
caused the rumor. There is a lot of misunderstanding out there and a lot
of people who aren't all that careful with what they call "facts." I've
often run into situations where I've been asked, did you know that so-n-so
was gay, having an affair, etc. Most of the time the person had little or
knowledge of the situation and no basis for the statement. In some of the
cases people have decided an individual must be gay because he "acted
effeminate" or just looked that way.
On the other hand, if there is more to it, I agree with Kathleen that you
need to be concerned whether the fellow is a pedophile.
Probably the best thing is to have a chat with your son and lay out your
concerns and uncertainties. You might even ask him for his advice on how
best to respond to the situation, letting him know that he really has
choices and allowing you more room to work on your concerns. And then at
least he will be armed to meet any situation that might arise in this or
another similar thing later. I think it best that he get in the decision
business while you can still give advice.
