Families in Cub Scouts

I am a new cubmaster for a small cub pack... I just finished reading the
October _Scouting_ (just getting caught up) and I read in "Front Line Stuff"
about discouraging children other than Cubs from attending Den Meetings.
While I agreee and understand this, what about *encouraging* family
participation at Pack events. For example, I just ran a hike of a local
mountain, and many families attended the activity. It seem to me that a
family focus at Pack Events can have a real positive benefit.
Thanks, In scouting,
