We have the boys purchase their own tents. They learn to take care of them
in short order. They purchase them during the first year in the troop.
During that year, they tend to share tents anyway. Sometimes two boys will
setup both tents, put gear in one and bed down together in the other.
We have them get the 2-man Eureka Timberline. Seems to hold together
well, is not too hot in Texas summers, and is backpackable. Most of the
boys get them at the local Academy chain stores (sporting goods) for
about $120, reg. price or as low as $89 on sale. They don't seem to carry the
flies, but I've seen them in the cataloges, like Campmor, etc. I think it
would be a good addition, but can't see why are so expensive. Most of the
scouts do not have them.
