Following a description of a camp inititiation Randy said thebest English
word forwhat took place was " hazing " . In my opinional the best <two>
English words are " psychological abuse " and the best single word is
good old-fashioned " bullying " - the systematic use of power to degrade
another human being.
Having myself been a victim of one such event that went out of hand ( and
whilst an ASM looked on) I will not tolerate this sort of behaviour.
In my case I was thrown into cold water which caused me to hyperventilate.
When I turned blue the ASM at last realised that something was wrong.
Fortunately I had my asthma medication and responded to it. Whilst this
is an extreme example of possible physical injury, the psychological damage
is also something that must be borne in mind. Thirty years later I still
feel angry at the recollection of that experience, and those Scouters who
