National does not specify an number of hours guideline for the Eagle Scout
Service Project. What they do specify is that sufficient work must be done
to clearly demonstrate the young man's leadership. (I am at work so this
approximately what the book says.)
If a troop decides to specify that your Eagle projects (or even a council
or district) must be between x and xy hours, they are in effect adding a
new requirement for Eagle. Clearly a no-no, since Eagle is NATIONAL's
award, not xxx troop's or xxxx Council's award.
The time required for the project is the time necessary to DEMONSTRATE
LEADERSHIP. No hours need be specified.
Now for what I see from most Eagle projects is 80 to 400 hours. Some lower
and some higher, but most are in the 100-200 hour bracket.
151 hours is a good number, and besides, it is suppose to be the young
man's BEST Effort! (The father needs more confidence in his son.)
Re: Merti Badge Counselors. In most councils, even scountmaster need to be
"DUAL REGISTERED" as merit badge counselors. If you hold a district and
troop position, you dual register. While, a merit badge counselor is a
distirct/council position. As more councils start doing what Fred's
council does (checking the Merit Badge Card), the need to be registered or
disappoint the boys will be greater. The registration is done for the
protection of the youths and to assure that the counselors know what they
are teaching. As an example, I sudder when I think of someone teaching
Lifesaving who has not been through training within the last 10 years.
Thinks have changed so much. It is kind like someone out there still
teaching (or even mentioning the word) tourniquet in the first aid arena.
