I agree with Jon wholeheartedly! I find I delete about 50% of Scouts-L
msgs in my mail box daily just on the basis of the subject line alone.
For example, I haven't seen anything new on the 13 yr old Eagle issue in
the last 2 weeks, just a lot of people expressing their own views. This
is ok, but since nobody is voting all we accomplished is identifying that
some people think it is OK and others don't, with a lot of extenuating
Another 'abuse' of the list is exemplified by the recent "Red Skelton"
request. One person posted requesting the words to some recorded thing
Red had done. This is fine. Then 5-6 more people posted to say
(essentially) "Gee, send me the words too..." along with a few others who
posted saying "I've got that recording at home and I'll transcribe it".
One person did reply with all the words as requested. Everything except
the original query and the final posting of the words should have been
handled by e-mail, off the list.
Learn to use your mail program. A "Reply" usually sends your response
right straight BACK to the Scouts-L list, unless you take EXTRA steps to
see that it goes by e-mail. Sometimes the response should go to the
list, but at least 1/2 of the traffic lately could (IMNSHO) have been
done via private e-mail.
