Thank you for your good answers. I didn't thank you before because I
wanted to tell how we actually solved the problem.
I received very good advice on my question on

Interestingly some people basically told me that mixing is good and some
other people told me that mixing is bad. That friendly "disagreement"
doesn't really matter because the reasoning and the encouragements were
good reading and useful by itself.
My particular problem has been solved without any of my doing. Our
recruiting payed and the den which was too small is now up to six boys.
Two parents will step in for a month when the real den leader is
absent. (One is his wife).

The lady who felt uncomfortable about the den has been satisfied. A
short meeting with the den leader's wife convinced her that the den is
real and we are trying to make a quality program.
The other lady's worry were about the logistics on bringing her boys to
two different den meetings at the same time. That problem has been
