Thank you for your recent posting in which you raised the question of
how to handle scouts who smoke at a camp out or scouting event. It seems tp
me that we have recently been involved in a discussion that provides the
answer. Whenever a scout is not following the rules, we need to turn the matter
over to the boys to solve. Have your PLC meet and discuss the matter to
include the punishment if one is needed. Your will find that the PLC is
usually better in handling the situation than are the adult leaders or the
troop committee. Their sanctions are often more meaningful. More inportantly,
the boys have all gained an important lesson in dealing with those who break
rules and in being fair.
Ours should be a boy run troop.
