I had sent the following direct to Randy, HE thought I should share
my 2 cents with the list :) So blame randy
My own son had 21 merit badges before he was 13. (sept birthday)
He had 2 summer camps and had earned 5 or 6 at each sumer, plus
YES, he was one of the first in the first class factory. IN fact,
he was second class before he was even 11. HOWEVER, some reason
prevailed, plus he had some delays in completing his project and
his FINAL MB, first aid! (but those are both other long stories).
As a very smart 14 year old, and active member of the OA etc.,
HONORS student, I would say he was a QUALIFIED Eagle!
However, last year, I also discussed the impact of 11 year olds
being elected into the OA. I related a story from our spring
Ordeal with a just barely 11 year old first class scout!! He
had never even camped at the camp where we were holding the
Ordeal. He asked me about the NOISES at the lake (frogs!!!)
He did not know where the LAVATORIES were located etc.
And I do not think anyone can PROVE how that these young first
class scouts, or 12 year old Eagles are really a benefit to
Scouting!!! I just think it does more the HURT the image
of scouting in general.
just returned from section conclave on Seneca Lake (finger lakes NY)
had a nice chat with Fred and Pual Rogers. Thanks for the 159 Noac Paul!
