First, a big THANK YOU to everyone who E-mailed and called with advice
about my 21 Wolves and 2 leaders problem. Bless you! I hope to
respond to each of you personally when I can find time.
We had our first Wolf meeting last night. We now have 3 Dens of 7 boys
each, 3 registered Den leaders, 3 Assistant Den leaders, and one Den
chief! (Praise the Lord!)
Prior to this meeting, I asked Jan (my Tiger Cub Co-Coach from last
year) if she would take Den #2 and she agreed! I also managed to
recruit Den leader #3 (one of last year's Tiger moms). Her son and
several other boys are wrestlers, and it turns out that our Thurs.
night Den meetings conflict with wrestling practice. So she is taking
the boys who are wrestlers, and now they won't have to choose between
Scouts and sports!
After I welcomed everyone and introduced myself, Jan, our new Den
leader, and my husband the Cubmaster; I explained that I had intended
to spend most of the meeting explaining the Wolf program and how it
works. But, (here comes the GUILT TRIP!) I said, there's no point in
my doing so until we get at least 3 Assistant Den Leaders. It'll break
my heart to have to turn any of these boys away, I said. Surely there
are 3 parents here who can help. One dad's hand went up immediately,
the father of one of our new Wolves. (I found out later his wife is a
Girl Scout leader and his daughter is a GS!) Great! Now we need 2
more. Another new Wolf scout's dad volunteered. Thank you! Before I
could ask for one more, the mom who chaired our Blue & Gold Banquet
last year volunteered.
After I had the boys introduce themselves, I explained the program and
answered questions. We set our goals and talked about Den meeting
rules. Then the boys had treats while we 6 leaders grouped the boys
into 3 dens. I also gave the other 5 leaders information on Training
being offered this month in our area. (I am the only trained Wolf
leader so far.)
The Cubmaster talked about our upcoming events and Wreath sale
fundraiser. He also filled out the paperwork to register our 4 new
It was hotter than heck in the Christian Community Center where we met
(no windows, no air conditioning), but I was in heaven. The Cubmaster
told everyone not to worry about how warm the place was: "In a month,
it'll be snowing!" That's Wisconsin for you.
Thanks again to all who helped.
Yours in Scouting,
Wolf Den #1 Leader
