David Weintraub writes:
"The Pledge of Allegiance is not recited in _public_ schools anymore due
"to a Supreme Court decision that forcing students to say it was
"interfering with their religious beliefs. Now before any of you get on
"When their children refused to say the pledge, they were beaten up by
"the other kids. The Supreme Court noted that this seemed to be
"encouraged by the teacher and the administration of the school. The
"Court ruled that the atmosphere of the situation made it impossible for
"those who objected on religious grounds to say the Pledge of Allegiance
"to be able to follow their religious convictions, and that coercion was
"taking place merely by the fact that the Pledge was recited.
And we wonder why the Federal Gov't has proposed workplace rules that
prohibit the wearing or display of religous items as providing a hostile
atmosphere for the non-religous.
When I was in school, we had a Jehova's Witness family in the town. The
children left the clasroom during the PoA, and nobody said anything. I
also remember a Christian Scientist who was excused from health classes
for a similar reason.
I'd better close this before I go off into a multi-page disertation on
why our kids aren't learning anything in the public schools.
